چکیده

Times of arrival of high energy neutrinos encode information about their sources. We demonstrate that the energy-dependence of the onset time of neutrino emission in advancing relativistic jets can be used to extract important information about the supernova/gamma-ray burst progenitor structure. We examine this energy and time dependence for different supernova and gamma-ray burst progenitors, including red and blue supergiants, helium cores, Wolf-Rayet stars, and chemically homogeneous stars, with a variety of masses and metallicities. For choked jets, we calculate the cutoff of observable neutrino energies depending on the radius at which the jet is stalled. Further, we exhibit how such energy and time dependence may be used to identify and differentiate between progenitors, with as few as one or two observed events, under favorable conditions.

Probing dark gamma‐ray bursts with neutrinos

Highly relativistic jets are a key element of current gamma-ray burst (GRB) models, where the jet kinetic energy is converted to radiation energy at optically thin shocks. Mildly relativistic jets with smaller Lorentz factors are typically optically thick to gamma rays, and do not produce the spectacular GRB phenomenon. Jets which stall inside the progenitor similarly do not produce a GRB. Howe...

Revealing the supernova-gamma-ray burst connection with TeV neutrinos.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are rare, powerful explosions displaying highly relativistic jets. It has been suggested that a significant fraction of the much more frequent core-collapse supernovae are accompanied by comparably energetic but mildly relativistic jets, which would indicate an underlying supernova-GRB connection. We calculate the neutrino spectra from the decays of pions and kaons produ...

The supernova-gamma-ray burst-jet connection.

The observed association between supernovae and gamma-ray bursts represents a cornerstone in our understanding of the nature of gamma-ray bursts. The collapsar model provides a theoretical framework for this connection. A key element is the launch of a bipolar jet (seen as a gamma-ray burst). The resulting hot cocoon disrupts the star, whereas the (56)Ni produced gives rise to radioactive heati...

Relativistic jets in Core Collapse Supernovae

After several decades of extensive research the mechanism driving core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) is still unclear. A common mechanism is a neutrino driven outflow, but others have been proposed. Among those, a long-standing idea is that jets play an important role in SN explosions. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that accompany rare and powerful CCSNe, sometimes called “hypernovae”, provide a clear e...

The Supernova Early Warning System

A core collapse in the Milky Way will produce an enormous burst of neutrinos in detectors worldwide. Such a burst has the potential to provide an early warning of a supernova's appearance. I will describe the nature of the signal, the sensitivity of current detectors, and SNEWS, the SuperNova Early Warning System, a network designed to alert astronomers as soon as possible after the detected ne...
